How to Recycle/Dispose of Glass products

Accepted items include:

All food and beverage jars and bottles made of glass. Please rinse out, and place these in your blue bin for collection.

Sorry, we cannot accept:

Even though other types of glass (examples include: drinking glasses, window glasses, heat-resistant ovenware (for example, Pyrex or Visionware), and light bulbs) can look very similar to the glass used in food and beverage containers, their special properties, such as heat-resistance, UV light resistance, or shatter-resistance, cause them to behave differently during processing. The resulting recycled-content glass products could be of lower quality due to bubbles, cracks, or inclusion of the "foreign" pieces. Manufacturing equipment can also be damaged.

How to Recycle/Dispose of Plastic Bottles products

Accepted:

Sorry,

What about the lids?

We do not accept lids/caps from plastic bottles. Please put these lids/caps into the trash.

Why only bottles?

The reason for the neck requirement, and the fact that we accept only bottles, has to do with the molding process for the containers in question.

The "necked" plastic containers are formed through a blow-molding process, for which molten plastic has a viscosity similar to that of honey. The non-neck containers, formed through injection-molding, require a more water-like consistency. Generally, these two categories of plastic containers cannot be mixed together during the recycling process; the resulting "soup" would not be suitable for either molding process.

Want to check how a container was molded? Turn it upside down:

Confused about those resin codes?

Resin codes are the numbers you find on the bottom of plastic containers and bottles. To make recycling easier for residents, we no longer use these codes (numbers 1 through 7) to determine whether a plastic item is acceptable or not. Now, we use the following criterion: if the plastic container has a narrow neck opening (like a bottle), then you may recycle it in our program. If the plastic container is not a bottle, please dispose of it as trash.

Learn more about plastic resin identification codes from the American Plastics Council. [Click on "Plastics 101", and then select "Plastic Recycling Codes."  Go to the following website for more information.
